Access, storage, equipment and local information: what to check on site before promoting your accommodation to guests travelling by bike.

After a day on a bike, a guest mainly wants to know where to enter, where to put their belongings and where to leave their bicycle. A welcoming listing is not enough if the gate is impossible to find or the promised storage space is already full.

Atout France announces “France, Le Grand Détour 2027”: a January–December 2027 press campaign for the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Belgian Flanders. This project provides a context for reviewing your welcome. It does not allow you to predict demand or guarantee bookings. The ideas below are practical recommendations to adapt to each property.

### Test the arrival route with a bike

Walk the route between the street and the entrance guests actually use. Steps, a narrow door or a cluttered courtyard can make access difficult with panniers.

Also check the instructions sent before arrival: the exact address, the correct gate, where to find the key and whom to contact if there is a problem. If guests need to carry their bike, say so clearly. Precise information helps them make an informed choice.

### Describe the storage space as it is

Before advertising bike storage, measure its usable capacity and check access. How many bikes can fit without blocking a door or moving cleaning equipment? Does the room lock? Is it shared with other occupants?

State these features without turning a simple shelter into a security guarantee. Explain who opens it, how to collect the key and when storage is accessible. Then check that the instructions still reflect reality, particularly after a change of team or layout.

### Make room for belongings

Helmets, panniers, shoes and damp clothes need a simple arrangement. Identify the spaces genuinely available for leaving these items and drying them, where a suitable place exists.

Plan for cleaning the areas guests pass through, too. If you provide equipment, check that it is present and in good condition before mentioning it in the listing. A short, accurate list is better than an extensive inventory that cannot be maintained for every stay.

### Provide verified local information

A useful information sheet can bring together nearby shops, their opening hours, tourist information points and links to routes published by local organisations. Record the date of your latest check so you know when to update the information.

Distinguish what you know first-hand from what depends on a third party. Avoid describing a route as easy or suitable for everyone without a clear basis. If a service varies with the season, mention this and encourage guests to check that it is open before setting out.

### Organise checks between stays

Assign the checks: clear access, key present, storage available, clean spaces and up-to-date information. Each point should have an identifiable person responsible. When something is wrong, decide who will address it and who will update the information given to the guest.

For an operation that uses StayClean, these points can guide on-site checks and the coordination of visits. Clients schedule their cleaning according to their needs. The aim is therefore to include the relevant spaces in the agreed instructions, rather than treating bike storage as a detail unrelated to the stay.

### Promise only what has been checked

Describe concrete features: a shared lockable room, access with two steps or a space for panniers. Do not display any label or certification your property does not hold.

Before updating the listing, ask someone who knows the property first-hand to review the description. A credible welcome for cyclists starts with this consistency between the words, the instructions and what guests will actually find on arrival.
